Many people wonder, year after year, whether to plant in spring, summer, or fall. Although potted plants car be installed throughout the year, perennials are happy to be planted late in the season as well. Plus, trees particularly enjoy fall planting. It's best to plant late when the growing season is surely over, which is especially important for large-caliber trees.
During late fall planting, roots are protected from the cold underground. Also, no fragile new growth will suffer through winter since nothing will have sprouted after being planted. Finally, with snowmelt, the spring soil is often waterlogged, providing ideal conditions for roots during the first few weeks.

One thing to keep in mind is to water newly planted vegetation thoroughly throughout their first summer, and often during their first two summers.

So as long as the ground can be dug, don’t hesitate to plant!

Although many perennials are no longer blooming, it’s not over in October! You can still decorate your flower beds with autumn potted blooms that pair well with tree foliage.
It’s also a good idea to leave some space in your gardens for fall asters, both for their beauty and to nourish native pollinators.
Lastly, for the past few years, some late-blooming annual cultivars have kept gardens interesting until frost. Think of Rudbeckia 'Indian Summer' and 'Irish Eye', which will brighten up the last beautiful days with their vibrant blooms.

Take Your Time
As the days shorten, many gardeners rush to clean up and get everything ready for the off-season. It’s still too early to tidy up flower beds, especially considering that winter frosts are arriving later and later.

The return of warm temperatures could revive growth in perennials and shrubs pruned too early in the season, compromising their survival.

Wait until the ground is cold.

Always Ready!
As for winter protection, it’s still too early to install it, but now is the perfect time to prepare.

Get your protective covers, plant stakes in the ground, and plan upcoming tasks.

When the time comes, everything will go faster!

Yellowing Needles on Conifers
Keep in mind that even though most conifers are evergreen, they shed needles or scales annually, like all plants.

Every year, cedars, pines, and spruces lose some of their inner foliage, which turns yellow before falling.

There’s no need for concern!

For Healthy Planting
It’s still time to spread fall fertilizer at the base of your plants, especially for young landscaping.
